Going Ancestral for the Aesthetics: The Raw Beauty Smoothie

Going Ancestral for the Aesthetics: The Raw Beauty Smoothie

When Bolor and I started working together, we, like so many office workers, made a habit of grabbing lunch out. It was easy, convenient, and, at the time, felt like a nice break from the grind. Over time, we started examining our choices. Were our daily routines actually aligning with our long-term health goals?

Eating out certainly doesn’t hold up to scrutiny: it is expensive, time-consuming, and the search for something that “sounds good” gets tiring. Don’t even get me started on the seed oils in EVERYTHING or the generally low-quality ingredients. Eventually, we made a small but pivotal shift: we stopped eating out and started making our lunches tailored to address whatever health issues that we wanted to optimize. Generally they were protein forward, anti-inflammatory, seasonal, and delicious.

Fast forward to 2022. I had just returned from my honeymoon, and to my complete surprise, was pregnant. Six weeks later, I had a miscarriage, which shocked me to my very core. Up until that point, I had never experienced a major health challenge or anything that made me feel like my body had “failed” me. I didn’t yet understand how common miscarriages are or that, in many cases, they’re an act of biological intelligence, when our bodies recognize that something isn’t quite right.

I sought comfort in knowledge and became obsessed with learning what I could about hormone health. I rediscovered nose-to-tail eating, specifically, the profound benefits of liver. I had been introduced by the great performance-chef Mary Shenouda to liver, specifically her Bangin’ Liver recipe, at a pop up event in Jack London Square in 2020, but preparing it at home just seemed so…involved. And gross. But, the nutrient density of liver simply cannot be denied. Google the nutrient stats of liver to chicken to beef, and you’ll agree.

I started small, taking desiccated organ capsules. I disliked the expense and experience of taking 6 pills a day and decided to go straight to the source. I started adding frozen raw liver to my protein smoothies. The difference was immediate and undeniable: my energy was consistently higher, I felt stronger in my workouts, I recovered faster, and the hair/skin/nails were very happy. There was a clear and tangible shift in my overall vitality.

We started playing around with smoothie recipes to make them more palatable and enjoyed them when we could. And then, the weirdest thing happened. We started to crave the liver smoothie. No bullshit. Our thoughts would wander to the smoothie. So, we added the Raw Beauty Smoothie to our Tuesday/Thursday work-in-person routines.  Twice a week, without fail, followed by the truly delicious chia pudding

I know the “ick” factor is real. But sourcing high-quality organ meats from a trusted butcher makes all the difference. Here’s what helped me: ask your butcher to grind it for you, then spread it flat on parchment paper (so it doesn’t stick) and freeze it flat.  That way, it breaks apart easily, and you can just toss a piece straight into your blender. Minimal mess and effort.

How to Make the Raw Beauty Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 75g frozen beef or lamb liver and/or heart, ground

  • ¾ - 1 cup organic frozen blueberries (wild preferred)

  • 8oz raw kefir

  • 1 tbsp black cumin seed oil

  • 1 scoop of your preferred protein powder

  • 5g creatine monohydrate

  • Raw honey to taste (optional)

Directions:

  1. Add frozen organ meats and blueberries to the kefir in a blender.

  2. Add black cumin seed oil and honey to the mixture. Blend well.

  3. Add creatine and protein powder last to prevent over-blending (which can cause gas). Blend until smooth.

  4. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Tip: Don’t over-blend once you add the protein powder, as this can create excessive air in the smoothie, leading to bloating.
